In the near future, New York City police officers might be driving around in high tech smartcars.

The cars will be equipped with surveillance cameras and infrared sensors that collect and catalogue data while the officers are on duty, including license plate numbers, addresses, and radiation levels in the air.

The video camera footage and other data can be sent directly to police headquarters, while license plates can be automatically scanned to see if they are registered as stolen, or have unpaid parking tickets.

Not all of the features are new, but this is the first design that has all of the technology in a single police cruiser.

NYPD Deputy Inspector Brandon del Pozo is quoted as saying: “If you look in the trunk of a police car …we have a shield, we have a fire extinguisher…we have a very powerful flashlight, we have a first aid kit. So, the thought is always, what can cops bring with them to the scene that can increase their effectiveness.”

A prototype version of the Ford hybrid model smartcar has reportedly been patrolling the 84th precinct in Brooklyn for nearly a year.

The smartcar is part of a larger initiative by the New York Police Department called NYPD2020, which has dozens of new projects in the works.
