It’s estimated that there are 5 thousand pet monkeys in the UK, and experts say obesity is becoming an epidemic among them.

Just like people, monkeys who have a diet heavy in sugar and fat and a lifestyle light on exercise and activity become overweight.

The pets, however, typically develop their cookie, potato chip, and pizza habits because they’re fed those inappropriate foods by humans.

That issue is often compounded by a few other matters.

One is that there’s often a lack of ample room for the monkey to run around in and burn the calories off.

Another is that the primates have a natural preference for sweets, starch, and fat, and when given them will eat as much as they can as quickly as possible to ensure nobody takes them.

That type of overconsumption can lead to diabetes, and obesity in general is bad news for overall heath.

A woman who runs a sanctuary in Yorkshire said that more and more, fat monkeys are ending up in her care, some of them so large they can’t even move.

Once placed on a diet of vegetables and oat cakes, however, the pounds start to melt away.
