Authorities Concerned About Counterfeit MAC Cosmetics

Given that the MAC brand of beautifying goodies has such a high demand, many counterfeit versions are popping up, especially in the Bay area.

Beauty buffs and makeup artists around the world seem to gravitate towards MAC cosmetics. Given that the high end brand of beautifying goodies has such a high demand, many counterfeit versions are popping up, especially in the Florida Bay area.

ABC action news decided to look into the phenomenon to find out why MAC is the desired cosmetic target. According to a Tampa based makeup artist, it's due to the high amount of pigmentation and lasting power of the makeup.

After some digging, the crew at the news outlet found counterfeit MAC lipsticks and eye shadows being sold at local flea markets, as well as on eBay, Craigslist and Amazon, through third party sellers.

The makeup is usually sold for a few dollars under standard retail prices. Take lipstick for example, which is priced at about $15 through MAC. Fakes being sold online can be found in a price range of about $10 -$13 new, but they’re mostly being purchased by fraudsters from a factory in China for under $1.

The counterfeit cosmetics pose a potential hazard, as they contain inferior ingredients which can cause skin irritations and breakouts.
