United States marks 50 years since the assassination of JFK
Events have been held across the United States to mark 50 years since President John F Kennedy was assassinated.
In Dallas, the city where JFK was shot dead, a minute’s silence was held and bells tolled across the city.
The mayor spoke about how the city had been affected and had moved forward since the tragedy.
A monument was unveiled in Dealey Plaza, where the assassination happened. On it are lines of the speech JFK was about to make but was never able to.
It was just before noon on November 22 1963 that a convoy of cars left Dallas airport. The president and first lady were on a campaign trip. As the cars moved through Dealey Plaza , the presidential limousine was fired upon. Kennedy was hit twice and later died.
Former marine Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the crime. Two days later he was killed, and never able to stand trial.
Conspiracy theories have always surrounded JFK’s death and continue to this day.
