Many people feel working in public service is something they were called to do. These caring individuals give back by helping others change their lives for the better, which is often payment enough. Today we will get to know Catie Behling, a recent graduate of Kaplan University’s College of Public Service.

Like many Americans, Catie worked a job she didn’t like. As a waitress at a casual restaurant, she spent her days bringing people burgers and fries. Not only was it unfulfilling, but the job barely paid the bills. Then one day, she was offered an assignment as a nanny for a family with three small children, two of which were autistic.

While caring for the children, Catie also met and observed their therapist. The impression those sessions made changed the direction of her life. When Catie saw the positive effect treatment could have on the lives of an entire family, she knew she wanted to work with special needs children. The only problem was Catie didn’t have time to go back to school.

Her job as a waitress kept her busy for 50 hours a week, which meant traditional college was out of the question. Then Catie discovered Kaplan University, an online institution of higher learning that fit into her busy schedule. With a few minor adjustments, she was able to attend classes on the Internet while she balanced her jobs.

It was never easy, but Catie eventually earned her master’s degree. Soon after, she obtained her Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification, which allows her to work with special needs children.* Catie Behling now enjoys a rewarding career as a behavioral therapist. She uses the skills, methods, and concepts she learned at Kaplan University to help children who cannot speak find their voice. Catie also helps special needs children become more independent by teaching them simple, basic skills like brushing their teeth and combing their hair.
