Bangkok officials purchase larvicide to tackle Dengue outbreak

In a bid to combat the spread of dengue fever, Bangkok officials announced on Monday the purchase of 200,000 bags of larvicidal sand, according to a report by Thailand's The Nation newspaper.

As part of the anti-dengue fever measures, officials hope to target areas that provide ideal breeding grounds for mosquito larvae. Mosquito larvae must make their way to the surface of the water they've developed in in order to breathe.

When applied, monomolecular film larvicides rapidly spread over the water's surface, forming a thin layer roughly one molecule thick. This reduces the surface tension of the water, disorienting the larvae and causing them to drown. Adult female mosquitoes who attempt to use the treated surface to lay eggs may also drown. City officials expect to receive half of the 200,000-bag order by July 10.
