This is the 5th in a series of videos featuring improvised phrases by be-bop jazz guitarist, Tal Farlow. It features a phrase played over a minor II-V progression and transcribed from the standard, "Yesterdays" off the recording "Tal".

About the Jazz Guitarist's Signature Series: Each lesson explores the improvisational style of a prominent artist within the history of jazz guitar. This is done with a short transcribed phrase, most likely executed over a repeating harmonic cadence (eg. II-V-I).

About Tal Farlow: Born in Greensboro, North Carolina on June 7, 1921, he was encouraged to play the guitar by his dad as a kid however didn't take it up seriously until age 21. Farlow's track record as an excellent bebop guitarist began to expand upon signing up with vibraphonist Red Norvo's Trio in 1949. After a short stint with Artie Shaw's Gramercy Five in 1953, Farlow began his own group featuring pianist Eddie Costa and in the years that followed recorded near to a dozen cds primarily for the Norgran and Verve labels. Worn out from the pressures of the music industry, in 1958 the guitarist relinquished full-time performing and went back to his occupation as a sign painter in Sea Bright, New Jersey. Farlow continued performing and recording occasionally. In 1962 the Gibson Guitar Corporation introduced the Tal Farlow model in homage to his artistry.

Tal Farlow died of cancer in New York City on July 25, 1998 at the age of 77.
