Tropical storm Karen weakens

Tropical storm Karen off the US Gulf Coast has been downgraded to a depression after earlier warnings it could reach hurricane level prompted evacuations.

The National Hurricane Centre advised the downgrade after top winds dropped to 55 kph and all tropical warnings and watches have been discontinued.
