Do you ever catch yourself letting your mind wander and daydream while driving?

One study from the Erie Insurance Group looked at the dangers of driving while distracted or not paying attention because of daydreaming.

Out of the 65 thousand fatal crashes between 2010 and 2011 that were accounted for in the study, 10 percent of accidents were caused by drivers being distracted.

Daydreaming while driving, which was defined as anything from running a red light to not being aware of a sharp bend, reportedly caused 62 percent of fatal accidents.

That’s five times more accidents than are caused by talking or using a cell phone while driving.

Data for the study was taken from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, which keeps track of deaths that involve a vehicle.

There are some ways to keep daydreaming behind the wheel to a minimum like moving your eyes around to different viewpoints to cut down on staring, which leads to day dreaming.

Chewing on something like gum or food can also help keep the driver alert while they are behind the wheel.
