South Korea announces a $6.3 million U.S. dollar humanitarian aid package to its impoverished northern neighbour.

A Unification Ministry spokesman on Monday said the money would go to the World Health Organization to help provide other essential health care for North Korean citizens.

The South's government also plans to approve another $2.14 million U.S dollars of humanitarian aid from South Korean civic groups.

The United Nations says almost a third of North Korean children under 5 suffer chronic malnutrition.

The world body has said it needs almost $100 million U.S. dollars to fund North Korean fund aid programmes for the rest of 2013.

Tensions between the two Koreas have eased after the two agreed to restart their troubled joint industrial park, raising hopes for stronger ties in the future.
