A British charity is advising young women who fear they’re being taken out of the country for a forced marriage to hide a spoon in their underwear.

In addition to setting off airport metal detectors, having the spoon in a private area will often require that officials take them to a secure and secluded area.

Getting away will give them an opportunity to report what is happening and get the help they need to escape the situation.

The charity, Karma Nirvana, says that the tactic has proven successful in saving some women from entering a life of servitude.

British officials report that in the summer months its more common for young girls to be sent away and forcibly wed than at other times of the year.

As it’s an extended school break, the likelihood that absences will be noticed by teachers and classmates is significantly lower.

The victims themselves may even believe they’re travelling with family for a vacation.

While hard statistics are unavailable, it’s estimated that up to 5000 young British women - with approximately a third under the age of 16 - are forced into marriages every year.
