Crabs in Norwegian Tourist Attraction Spared From Sickness

In Norway, a man named Kjell Sørbø is accused of not prioritizing the welfare of his live crabs above his desire to display them in tanks as a popular tourist attraction.

Whether it’s Sea World or your local zoo, people seem to love watching animals. And most of the time, the animals don’t seem to mind being the star attraction as long as they’re properly cared for and comfortable.

But in Norway, a man is accused of not prioritizing the welfare of his live crabs above his desire to display them in tanks as a popular tourist attraction. Called the “crab king,” he is a fisherman who offers tours so people can see his collection.

Those tours have now been stopped by Norway's food standards authority. According to its spokesperson Robin Martinsen, “It is not natural for a crab to be exposed to strong light, heat and noise outside water. It can also be seasick during transport, it is quite well known. Crabs have feelings too, and like other animals they have the right to be treated properly.”

Though he has appealed his tourist attraction being shut down, the authority's headquarters has rejected his appeal.

It is unknown as to whether or not the food standards authority would agree to the re-opening if the conditions under which the crabs were kept would change.
