Egypt army topples president, announces transition

Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi is out.

The head of Egypt's military forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi made the official announcement in a televised address effectively confirming Mursi's removal from office.

He called for suspension of the constitution and the appointment of the head of the constitutional court as interim head of state.

Sisi called for presidential and parliamentary elections.

The news prompted celebrations where thousands had been gathered in Tahrir Square --- all of it a stark contrast to the smaller, less exuberant crowd who gathered in support of Mursi outside a mosque.
