Why Is China Betting On The Small South American Country Of Suriname?

Recently, China has taken a strong interest in the quiet South American nation of Suriname. And for good reason: the small country sandwiched between Guyana and French Guiana is rich in natural resources like rain forests, arable land and valuable deposits of bauxite. As IBTimes reporter Patricia Rey Mallen writes, “China wants a piece of it”. And they’ve made significant progress. Since 2010 when the Netherlands ceased the aid program to their former colony China has become the top financial provider to Suriname. Rey Mallen explained to us why this tiny South American country is of such interest to the Asian superpower and what their investment means for the United States.
