Death Cafes where people gather to have open, philosophical discussions about human mortality and enjoy some food, are popping up across the US.

If you enjoy pondering death and love a good gathering with friends and cake, you may want to check out a Death Café.

The groups, where people gather to have open, philosophical discussions about human mortality and enjoy some food, are popping up across the US.

Not to be confused with grief counseling or support groups, Death Cafés are organized for the purpose of encouraging frank discussion about the often-taboo topic.

Among the few things that are restricted conversation-wise are judgments and proselytizing.

The practice began to appear in France and Switzerland about a decade ago and has become increasingly common in the US over the past year.

Much of their popularity is the result of the efforts of Jon Underwood who maintains a website and a Facebook page to educate and advance the concept.

On both, the 40-year-old London resident offers tips on how to organize and promote a meeting as well as where to find one.
