Poor weather halts India flood rescue

Poor weather disrupts rescue operations in flood-hit northern India on Monday, rendering helicopters unable to fly.

The military has been called in to help save those stranded by the flooding, many of them Hindu pilgrims and tourists.

Indian officials are closely monitoring the weather for any changes.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) DIRECTOR OF THE METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT, ANAND SHARMA SAYING:

"Yesterday we were expecting that we might not get any windows for rescue operations but today it appears that one or two windows might be available for helicopter sorties if the helicopters are available in the nearby areas."

Flash floods and landslides unleashed by early monsoon rains have killed at least 560 people in Uttarakhand state and left tens of thousands missing.

In Mumbai, flood victims arrived from flood-stricken Uttarakhand.
