Russian President Vladimir Putin turned out on Saturday to commemorate the anniversary of the start of World War Two in 1941.

The ceremony took place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow, near the Kremlin.

A military band played and Putin, together with other officials, laid flowers near the eternal flame.

Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, marking the beginning of what is known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War.

Russia marks the end of World War Two with a nation-wide celebration held annually on May 9, also known as Victory Day.
