I am self-employed in the Marine Industry for the last 30 years and the name of my company is Affordable Marine Service. AMS is a large Boatyard facility near downtown San Diego, where we service, power boats (gas and diesel), install new and used engines, sell boats and boat parts. Cummins, Mercruiser, Yanmar , Volvo Penta , Indmar , Crusader , Yamaha , Mercury , Mariner , Johnson , Evinrude are all the types of engines we work on. AMS “Sister” company is Armored Hull, which I own with 2 other people and with that company we manufacture and sell boat liners for boat hull protection. Armoredhull boat shields allow you to keep your boat in the ocean without any of the growth problems that the other boaters constantly battle.
For enjoyment on my time off my passion is deep-sea sports fishing. Because San Diego is so close to Baja Mexico and Catalina we have some of the best fishing in the world. I just repowered my 24 Skipjack from a gas engine to the Mercruiser 1.7 diesel making the trip via water down the Baja fuel-efficient. We leave San Diego Bay and the trip takes approximately 1 to 2 hours until we are on the fish kelp patties. My Skipjack is a fishing machine; we have 12-rod holders, radar, fish finder, and custom bait tank system. We mainly fish for Marlin, Albacore, Big Eye, Blue Fin, Sharks; Mako and Thresher, Yellow Tail and Yellow Fin.
Catalina is another excellent area to fish. Leaving San Diego Bay it’s only a 4-5 hour trip to get to the fishing grounds. Because the water is cooler we mostly hunt for Yellowtail,White Seabass, Calico Bass , Barracuda and Rock Cod. Lots of nother things to do on Catalina Island including eating at restaurants and bars, playing a round of golf or doing some cool site seeing and hiking.
Offshore boating is another passion of mine, trips to the Coronado Islands in less then 15 minutes from Point Loma is the average time for us when we are cruising at an average of 70 MPH in our offshore boats. I race my friends – we all stick to either a Formula, Scarab, Fountain offshore style boat. This sport is not like taking my Skipjack fishing – we generally go through $500.00 per boat per day in gasoline – but you just can’t beat the rush.
