There are a lot of misconceptions floating around as to why roof shingles turn black. Here are a few facts about what is really going on with your dirty roof.
Why Roof Shingles Turn Black

Even if a roof has fungus resistant shingles, the fungus protection applied by the manufacturer can start to deteriorate within as little as 2-3 years after installation. After that, staining will begin to appear within six months.

If left untreated, the Algae and fungus growing on your roof shingles will leave behind black streaks and stains that will continue to spread across your roof.

Algae and fungi multiply by airborne microscopic spores and germinate. Roof algae and fungus feed on organic matter such as asphalt and decompose and will eventually destroy the material they feed off of.
