00:00I remember that as a child, I always wanted to fly like Superwoman over my playground
00:13because I was so angry about how limited I was.
00:22When I was born, my mom was just devastated.
00:25You know, you envision your child to be perfect, you know, ten fingers, ten toes.
00:30She didn't know, you know, what kind of life could I lead.
00:34I was depressed.
00:35I didn't want any visitors.
00:37I closed the curtain and I said, no, let me be by myself to think over what did I do wrong.
00:47My mom was going to take care of me for the rest of my life.
00:51I knew that it would be hard for her to let me go.
00:56As a child, everyone had something I didn't have.
01:00And I knew that people reacted to me different.
01:03Having prosthetic arms, people called me Hook or Robot Girl.
01:09I struck out against that to prove that I could be as independent as anyone.
01:19I remember the t-shirt announcing that we were going to have our dance recital on stage
01:26in front of all our family and friends.
01:28And I didn't want any part of that.
01:31And I was so nervous.
01:32All I could do was look down at my tap shoes.
01:36And then came the time when there was a first round of applause.
01:39She wanted to dance in the back row.
01:46She didn't know if she even wanted to be in the recital or not.
01:49And by showtime, she was ready to dance.
01:53And I've seen such a wonderful change in her.
01:59My entire life, I'd never met anyone with the same condition as me.
02:04But I remember seeing a TV piece about a woman.
02:08Her name was Barbara Guerra and she was a young mom.
02:12She had a baby.
02:13She was changing the baby's diaper.
02:16And after that, I was a different person.
02:20It's really incredible how one person can be that difference for someone.
02:24When was the last time you said, I can't?
02:33How many of you said, I can't, today?
02:38And guess what are the two words that I've eliminated from my vocabulary?
02:41I can't.
02:43I ride with my toes.
02:45I drive a car with my feet.
02:50I use nunchucks with my feet.
02:53And actually, in about a month, I'm getting married.
02:59How many of you really believe that I fly an airplane without any arms?
03:04Let me check how much we got in here.
03:07That's good.
03:08So it was three years of challenges.
03:10But because I had that drive and that desire, I knew that that was going to get me there.
03:17The first challenge I had in flight training, buckling up the harness.
03:21I actually stood up on the seat, buckled the harness first, loosened the straps, slipped
03:27in.
03:31Flying is the ultimate form of independence.
03:41So our young person who rocks this week is 26-year-old Jessica Cox.
03:45Jessica Cox is certified by the FAA to fly with her feet.
03:48If I can fly an airplane, what is it that you can't do?
03:53President Obama met with Jessica Cox at the White House and called her an inspiration.
03:59Nice to meet you guys.
04:02I met people as far as Africa.
04:05I just recently met someone born without arms.
04:08And many people in her community said she doesn't deserve to live.
04:13I'm not going to change everyone's mind on that.
04:16But I travel all over the world saying it's okay to be different.
04:21One of the girls actually that I was mentoring, who was abandoned as an infant in an orphanage
04:26in Siberia, doesn't think any of the guys are going to date her.
04:30I think it's going to be very important that she comes to the wedding to see me in
04:37a dress and figuring out how to throw the bouquet and how to cut the cake with the long
04:42dress on.
04:43And for her to be able to witness that, I think, will change her in a way that my older
04:49mentor changed me.
04:51We kind of relate because we both kind of have a hard life because I can't hear.
04:56Well, I was pretty amazed by what she did.
05:00I don't know how she succeeds like that.
05:04I can tell you today that if I was given the choice, I wouldn't want the arms because
05:09of the wonderful things I've been able to do.
05:11And not necessarily the things like flying a plane, but the lives that I've been able
05:15to touch.
05:29you
