LES SIESTES EN COREE

Of course, Seoul had a club scene for a long time but something is happening right now. Seoul is now on the map. Boiler Room got there for the first time few months ago, Resident Advisor got a residency this November, we went there in September, Nuits Sonores in December, Mixmag just opened a dedicated Korean version of their website and most of the European and American djs that are touring Asia are now stopping in Seoul for one gig. All that started in Hongdae 10/15 years ago, but then died out a little bit and there is some kind of a renewal in Itaewon these days. But it seems to start again from scratch. As surprising as it is for the 10 millions inhabitants capital of the 13th richest country in the world, you have 5 or 6 clubs where to go that only fits 350 maximum people. Most of those new clubs are located in the specific neighborhood named Itaewon, next to the main US army base. Mystik was one of the first to be internationnally known. Now you have Cakeshop, Venue, Pistil but also Constant Value or Vurt (even if not in Itaewon). Those clubs are quite small. Compared to the huge night complexs you can find in the famous Gangnam area, it's ridiculous. But they are getting more and more attention from the international club scene, the local audience and especially the local djs/beatmakers/promoters scene.
If djs like Antal, Pablo Valentino, Dixon or Jlin know where to play in Seoul now, the next step will be to see a growing Korean scene becoming more well known abroad. This has yet to come.
