Later, he joined Pakistan People’s Party and served as a Member of the Central Executive Committee (1999-2007) and also as the Vice President of the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP – from 2002 to 2007) under the leadership of the former Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto. Mr Khattak, despite being well placed in the PPP heirarchy as well as being someone who was one of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s closest confidante, resigned from all his party positions as well as his basic membership when the Party went into political negotiations with the then dictator Gen Pervaiz Musharraf.
