Urban Chickens Get Dressed Up

Urban chickens get dressed up.

With urban farming becoming more popular, it was only a matter of time before the farm animals went the way of other city-dwelling domesticates – straight to the clothing and accessories aisle of their local pet store.

Dogs have sweaters, cats have jewelry, and now chickens have diapers.

For Julie Baker it all started when her chickens started spending more time indoors. Rather than clean her floors all day, Ms. Baker decided to launch a preemptive attack and made diapers for the house-loving birds.

She turned her homemade improvisation into a business and now ships 50 to 100 chicken diapers a week.

She’s not the only one who’s cashed in on the newfound popularity of urban chicken keeping.

One couple has turned their bird business into a multi-million dollar one. In addition to accessories their site sells baby chicks and treats for the full-grown varieties.

If you want to get in on the farming action, backyardchickens.com recommends you start by making sure it’s legal in your city.

Once you’ve cleared that hurdle they offer suggestions on picking breeds, setting up coops, and which bugs make the best treats.
