The field in Kyrgyzstan where a U.S. military refuelling plane crashed. Local officials and witnesses say it exploded in mid-air after its cargo ignited.

Teams have been scouring the area for signs of the three crew members who were onboard when the plane took off from Manas, the base the U.S uses as a transit center for Afghanistan.

Still burning embers from the wreckage. Parts of the fueselage, landing gear and lifejackets were strewn across a three mile area, some which teams are searching on horseback. An unidentified U.S. official arrives on the scene as teams searched for the plane's blackbox.

The plane, which left the Manas airport with 70 tonnes of fuel on board, was heading for Afghanistan before it dissappeared from radar screens around mid-afternoon.

Officials suspect storm clouds could have trigged the explosion.
