Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji was born on 15th April 1563 at Goindwal Sahib Amritsar.He was the youngest son of our 4th Guru Shri Guru Ramdas ji and Bibi Bhani Ji.
He learned the script of gurmukhi from Baba Bhudda ji . He was also master in other languages like Sanskrit, Hindi and Persian.
At the age of 18 he was entitled as the 5th Guru of Sikh by his father and 4th Nanak, Guru Ramdas ji.
At the age of 26 he married to the daughter of Sri Kishan Chand, Mata Ganga Devi ji. They had one son who was named Hargobind. Guru Nanak's 6th adobe of gurship was given to Guru Arjan Dev ji's son, Guru Hargobind ji.
Guru Arjan Dev ji was master in poetry, classical singing, civil engineering, organizing & management. He spent his whole life in doing charitable and social work for the improvement of masses.
Guru Arjan Dev ji blessed people by creating Adi Granth, Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji. In addition to his own verses & hymns (bani) He collected the verses & hymns of the previous 4 Gurus of Sikhs who are Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Angad Dev ji, Guru Amar Das ji & Guru Ramdas ji, in addition to this he also added the verses of Bhatts as well as Hindu & Muslim Saints & Pirs.
For the welfare of people, Guru Arjan Dev ji built sarovar (small lake) at Taran Taaran Sahib, he also constructed many wells, ponds, etc.
Guru Arjan Dev ji set the first installation of Guru Granth Sahib ji at Golden Temple (Darbar Sahib) Amritsar and made Baba Budha Ji first Head Granthi. He opened all the four door of Golden Temple for ever sect of the society irrespective of their cast and creed. He gave full freedom to Ragis & Dhadis to sing gurbani in Golden Temple (Darbar Sahib).
He knew that he had left with few days on the planet, so he handed all the seva of Gurdwaras to Bhai Gurdas Ji & Baba Budha Ji. He passed the light of Guru Nanak into Guru Hargobind Ji, making them 6th Guru of Sikhs. After handing over all the responsibilities, he left to Lahor with 5 sikhs.
At Lahor Mughal Emperor Jahangir imprisoned Guru Arjan Dev Ji and tortured them to accept Islam. He made Guru Arjan Dev ji sit on hot plate under fire, boiled their body in boiling water & poured hot sand on their body giving them intense discomfort & pain. Guru Arjan Dev ji took this as will of Akal Purakh (Supreme Lord) and didn't accepted any demands of Mughals, he kept doing his simran (meditation) through out the torture. On 25th May 1605 after completing his Japji Sahib's recitation he left his body to meet with the Supreme master (Akal Purakh).
"Bhat Mathura writes in the praise of Guru Arjan Dev Ji;
Dharan Gagan Nav Khand Meh
Jyot Swarupi Rahio Bhar.
Bhan Mathura Kach Bhed Nahi
Guru Arjan Parthakh Har".
Meaning;
He is totally pervading the earth, the sky & the 9 regions of the planet.
He is the embodiment of the light of God.
So speaks Mathura there is no difference between God & Guru, Guru Arjan is the personification of the
Lord himself.
