Netherlands' new king begins reign

The Netherlands' new king Willem-Alexander and his family wave to crowds in Amsterdam.

The 46-year-old, who began his reign on Tuesday, took up the throne after his mother Queen Beatrix formally abdicated, taking on the title of 'princess'.

He is the first king of the Netherlands since 1890.

Although the royal family has been largely stripped of its power, they remain a popular symbol for the Dutch people.

But the celebrations weren't confined to the Netherlands.

In Buenos Aires, residents partied late into the night, celebrating the Dutch king's wife, Queen Maxima, a former investment banker from Argentina.

Revellers performed an impromptu tango to mark the special occasion.
