Security is heavy after police say a Palestinian man stabbed and shot a Jewish settler to death in the occupied West Bank.

According to Israel, the Tuesday attack is the first of its kind since 2011, when two settlers and three of their children were killed in their home.

The assault took place at a bus station near the Palestinian city of Nablus.

"An attacker arrived at Tapuach junction and attacked a citizen, a resident of the settlement, stabbed him and apparently grabbed his gun with which he fired at a position over there and from there began to flee. Two border policemen who were positioned there opened fire towards the attacker and hit him."

Authorities say the Palestinian man is now in custody.

Nine Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank territories since the beginning of the year as clashes between the two sides continue to rise.
