STORY: Thousands of Chileans from dozens of environmental and social groups took part in a massive Earth Day protest in Santiago on Monday dubbed The March to Recover and Defend Our Water.

The demonstration was held in three points in the capital city and culminated in the central Heroes Plaza on Alameda Avenue.

Demonstrators denounced Chile's 1981 water code which introduced free-market mechanisms into the management of the country's water management system.

More than 100 different social and environmental groups participated in the march, in which indigenous demonstrators danced and held a purification ceremony.
