Thousands of Roman artefacts have been unearthed in an archaeological dig hailed as 'the most important excavation ever held in London'.

The find gives an extrarodinary insight into life in the city before it was Britain's capital.

The treasure trove was uncovered near the River Thames at a building site in the city's financial district.
