Australian national Warren Rodwell, released by rebels in the southern Philippines after 15 months in captivity.

Fifty-four-year-old Rodwell was kidnapped from his home on December 5, 2011, by Islamists posing as policemen.

His captors left him in a small fishing boat after midnight on Saturday.

Speaking to the media from Manila, Rodwell's siblings said the kidnappers must be brought to justice.

"We wish the Philippine police every success in tracking down the group that took Warren from his home. We hope they will be brought to justice so others don't have to experience what Warren has just been through."

Speaking to a local television station, Rodwell's wife said she paid the kidnappers 98,000 U.S. dollars with the help of a local vice-governor.

The Philippine and Australian governments have both said they uphold a no-ransom policy.
