Over a month's worth of snow fell in Kiev within 24 hours this week, halting traffic and stranding drivers on Saturday (March 23).

Some 50 cm (20 inches) of snowfall blanketed the Ukrainian capital - more than the monthly norm of 47 cm (18.5 inches).

The sudden snowstorm left many residents complaining that city authorities were not responding quickly enough to clear the streets.

Many truck drivers were stranded in the roads, and public transport such as buses and trams ground to a halt in snow. Some 550 servicemen were deployed to attempt to dig the city out and clear its streets.

Dozens of flights at Kiev's biggest airport Boryspil were delayed or cancelled because of the weather, and Zhuliany, the city's second airport shut down operations completely.
