The program was a quick success. It offered artists a venue in which to express and build upon their artistic abilities and impulses. It gave the city a means of beautifying areas that had been neglected due to years of harsh economic times and population decline.
In the nearly 30 years since its inception, more than 3000 murals have been created throughout the Philadelphia area.
It has also served as a key means of creating and building community through its numerous outreach programs including teaching creative skills and teamwork to at-risk children and offering individuals recently released from prison re-entry assistance.
