Falkland Islanders vote on sovereignty

Residents in the Falkland Islands are set to go to the polls on Sunday (March 10) to vote in a referendum over sovereignty.

Amid rising tension, the ballot is aimed at countering Argentina's claim over the British-ruled territory.

The result is likely back a "yes" for British rule.

Argentina has rejected it as a publicity stunt.

Local spokesman Gavin Short says residents should be heard.

SOUNDBITE: (English) GAVIN SHORT, SPOKESPERSON AND FALKLAND ISLAND ASSEMBLY MEMBER SAYING:

"It's a secret ballot. When you go through the door you can vote whichever way you want and nobody knows. So, if for instance the yes vote, if it's a large yes vote, then we will be taking those results to the international community, to various countries and saying, look, you know, if you believe in human rights, if you believe in self-determination, if you believe in the United Nations Charter, this is what our people have said. Please, please respect it."
