Thirty injured in China earthquake

STORY: An earthquake over the weekend in China's southwestern Yunnan province injured 30 people and forced more than 12,000 local residents to leave the devastated area after their homes and buildings were destroyed, state media reported on Monday (March 4).

Official state news agency Xinhua said no deaths had been reported, but three people were in serious condition.

More than 80,000 homes and water and power lines were damaged in the 5.5-magnitude earthquake, which struck Liantie township on Sunday (March 3) afternoon, Xinhua said quoting Yunnan's Civil Affairs Department.

Footage from Chinese state television CCTV showed rescue workers searching through the rubble. According to Xinhua, more than 400 policemen, fire fighters and soldiers were dispatched to the disaster site.
