STORY: As Pope Benedict on Thursday stepped down, his former home in the Vatican was sealed off while the Catholic Church awaits the election of the next pope.

Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone conducted the ceremonial sealing off immediately after Benedict's resignation took effect at 8 p.m. (1900gmt) on Thursday.

The doors leading to the papal study and bedroom were locked and sealed. A red ribbon with a Vatican seal was placed on the front doors.

Benedict officially stepped down on Thursday, the first pope in almost six centuries to do so, and the 115 cardinals due to pick his successor began informal meetings on Friday (March 1) to discuss procedures for the vote and size up candidates.
