Pope Benedict said on Thursday he would withdraw into isolation, away from public sight after his resignation at the end of the month.

Tears, laughter and applause marked a meeting the pontiff held with pastors from Roman parishes in the Vatican.

"Even if I am withdrawing into prayer, I will always be close to all of you and I am sure that you will be close to me even if I remain hidden to the world," the pope told the pastors.

During his address, Benedict spoke about his personal experiences during the Second Vatican Council held fifty years ago.

The pope was given a standing ovation at the end of his address and a long applause accompanied the Holy Father as he left the meeting.
