The head of Guinea's armed forces was killed on Monday when an aircraft carrying him and several other top military officials crashed here in Liberia.

Investigators and United Nations peacekeepers found the charred wreckage of the plane in a palm grove about 25 miles southeast of the Liberian capital Monrovia.

Although there were no reported survivors local residents said they could hear people crying out for help after the crash.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) LOCAL RESIDENT PAUL B. KENEDY, SAYING:

"People were crying, crying, calling for help, but at the time we couldn't do anything because fire was there so we never had the necessary equipment to go there and assist."

Liberia's defence minister said the cause of the crash wasn't immediately clear.

The top general, who was on a security mission to Liberia, was appointed by Guinean President Alpha Conde in 2010 following two years of military rule.
