Residents in Aleppo sift through the devastating aftermath of an attack - apparently by Syrian government forces.

This video obtained by Reuters shows the rebel-held district of Ansari on Monday (February 4).

Opposition activists say a government warplane bombed the area the day before, bringing down a five-story building.

Local people have been trying to clear the debris in the hope of finding victims.

A fighter from the Free Syrian Army says the attack mainly hit civilians.

SOUNDBITE: ABU AL FEDA, MEMBER OF THE FREE SYRIAN ARMY, SAYING (Arabic):

''Are there any Free Syrian Army members here? We are the Free Syrian Army, not these people. They killed them. They were only women and children. How can that be fair? A one-year-old girl was killed, what did she do? May God avenge us.''

For almost 2 years the conflict in Syria has escalated as rebels battle an end to the rule of President Bashar al-Assad.

Rebel advances have been limited up against government troops equipped with warplanes and superior weaponry.
