Applause for Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi as she receives an honorary doctorate from South Korea's Seoul National University.

The former political prisoner, who was under house arrest for almost 15 years in Myanmar, was recognised for her commitment to human rights and education.

Delivering a speech on democracy and development in Asia, Suu Kyi said she was particularly pleased to be in Seoul since Koreans had experienced many of the same struggles as Myanmar.

"They have had to struggle against military dictatorship and worked to re-establish democratic government and also to achieve economic success."

North and South Korea are still technically at war since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce without a peace treaty.

"The Koreans, more than perhaps many other peoples in the world, understand what inner conflict means, what divided people means, what it entails, what hardship, what heartbreaks personally as well as nationally."

Suu Kyi was due to return to Myanmar later on Friday.
