Live update & Analysis | Syria: Reports of an Israeli airstrike

Israeli jets have reportedly carried out an airstrike inside Syria - for the first time in more than five years.

But there are conflicting accounts of what the target was.

Regional security sources quoted by the Reuters news agency say Israeli aircraft attacked a convoy of trucks carrying weapons towards the border with Lebanon.

The Syrian state news agency, however, says Israeli jets have bombed a scientific research centre in Jamraya on the outskirts of the capital Damascus.

Lebanon's military says Israeli jets flew into Syrian airspace three times.

They say the attack destroyed the centre, killing two workers and wounding five others.

Michael Eisenstadt, a former military analyst with the US government, spoke to Al Jazeera about the recent events in Syria.
