Afghan youth prepare for US concert debut

Afghanistan's first national orchestra in 32 years is about to make its international debut.

Playing New York's iconic Carnegie Hall and Washington's Kennedy Center, 52 students from Afghanistan's National Institute of Music will mix Afghan folk music with Western classical.

The school from which the youth orchestra hails also has big plans. It's building a concert hall and dormitories for the musicians. By 2015 they hope to double enrollment to 300.

Al Jazeera's Jennifer Glasse reports from Kabul.
