At least one person is dead and 22 others injured after two road crashes in northern Greece involving a combined total of 28 vehicles.

The two accidents happened a few hundred metres apart on a highway close to the town of Alexandria.

Local police said one woman was killed, and two of those injured were in serious condition.

The rest - including two children - suffered minor injuries.

One pregnant woman who was also involved in the crash was taken to hospital.

Authorities believe dense fog may have contributed to the accidents, which took place just before 8 a.m. local time.

Emergency crews closed the motorway as they cleared cars and debris from the road.
