Bushfires plague south east Australia

Bushfires continued to burn in south east Australia on Saturday, though lower temperatures allowed fire fighters keep flames away from houses.

Fire fighters battled a wall of flames that approached the town of Cessnock in the Hunter Valley wine region.

As residents tried to prepare their homes and evacuate animals, the fire generated strong winds which resembled swirling tornadoes.

"No matter what direction you looked, there were flames."
