Accused movie theater gunman James Holmes was in a Colorado courtroom for what will be a week-long preliminary hearing.

For the first time, prosecutors will reveal the evidence they have against Holmes and make their case to proceed to trial.

Family and friends of the 12 people killed waited to be let into the rooom.

"It was very emotional for a lot of us and I think, you know, I think he (Holmes) this whole time he's been detached. He looked very disheveled in court today and he basically looked very disinterested."

Sam Soudani's daughter was injured during the attack.

"Trash. I mean honestly you sit there you look at a person and when you see there is no humanity left anymore you don't look at him as a person, you really don't. I took a glimpse at him there. I don't feel hate or anger towards him. I just don't feel anything towards him. I really don't, it's hard to explain it really is. I mean, part of me wants to rip his head off but part of me I can care less for him."

Police officer Jason Oviatt was the first to take the stand. The judge is expected to decide this week if the court has enough information for the case to proceed to trial.
