Nicaragua volcano spews billowing ash cloud

Nicaragua's San Cristobal volcano has been spewing a cloud of ash and smoke since a small eruption on Tuesday.

Authorities have asked those living within 3-kms of the volcano, to leave.

But many of the 300 families in the area say they're not going anywhere.

This man says the volcano is letting off sand more than anything else.

"I don't think it's a big problem," he says. "It intensifies and it goes down."

This woman believes God will prevent any disaster.

"We are here close to the volcano and we're used to it," she says. "We always have faith in God and the Virgin (Mary) that nothing will happen."

The 1,745-metre volcano - the tallest in Nicaragua's - has become active in recent years with a series of small eruptions.
