The sword was the standard armament of a free man or soldier during the time of Jesus ministry. They were expensive, and you'd have to sell a pretty fancy cloak to buy one. Egyptian soldiers had their bronze swords weighed when they were returned to the depot, to make sure the soldiers had not shaved some bronze off!
