STORY: Japanese media reported that at least five people were trapped inside of a collapsed tunnel on Sunday (December 2) after a highway tunnel west of Tokyo collapsed.

Media reports said at least three cars were stranded inside the tunnel and that one had caught fire.

The tunnel collapse was reported after 8am local time (2300GMT).

Media reported approximately 100 meters (328 feet) of the tunnel had collapsed with smoke causing problems for rescue crews although fire fighters had managed to enter the tunnel from about 0150GMT.

The tunnel, which lies between Ootsuki and Koushu city in Yamanashi prefecture, is the second longest tunnel on Japan's Chuo expressway at 4.3 kilometres long.
