Egypt's Mursi meets judges over power grab

Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi meets with senior judges on Monday - an effort to defuse a mounting crisis after he seized new powers.

The justice minister said he believed Mursi would agree with the judiciary's proposal to limit his new powers - while a spokesman for Mursi said the president was "optimistic Egyptians would overcome the crisis."

Meanwhile, in Cairo's famed Tahrir Square -- thousands gathered to mourn an activist who was killed in demonstrations last week.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) FUNERAL ATTENDEE, IMAN, SAYING:

"What is happening now is that we are condemning Mursi for the martyrs since he took over."

On Thursday, Mursi had issued a decree shielding him from judicial review - spurring violent protests.

On the Nile Delta town of Damanhour, hundreds marched ...carrying the coffin of a teenager also killed in clashes. The member of the Muslim Brotherhood that backs Mursi - was killed during an attack on Sunday on the group's office.
