UN Security Council close to Gaza agreement

Smoke rises over Gaza City, as the conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants enters its seventh day.

As both sides continue to exchange fire, negotiations have been held at the United Nations to try and reach a consensus.

The Moroccan ambassador said members of the Security Council were reviewing a draft statement for Tuesday (November 20) morning.

SOUNDBITE: (English) MOHAMMED LOULICHKI, AMBASSADOR FOR MOROCCO, SAYING:

"We tried to the maximum to accommodate all delegations and we are hoping and we are optimistic about tomorrow morning's by nine o'clock (1400 GMT) we will have the final word from all delegations."

Russia has said if the council cannot agree, it could push for a vote calling for an end to the violence.

The Security Council is generally deadlocked on the Israeli-Palestinian issue, which diplomats say is due to the U.S. protecting Israel.

U.N. Secretary-General has called for an immediate ceasefire.
