Puppets, muppets and marionettes... hundreds of them gathered on the mall in Washington DC this weekend to show support for public broadcasting.

They're showing their opposition to a comment Mitt Romney made during a debate last month that he would cut funding for America's public broadcasting stations.

Puppets similar to these appear on children's programs on public broadcasting channels across the country.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) LINDA DENNIS, DEMONSTRATOR SAYING :

"Our kids were raised on MPT (Maryland Public Television) and we feel like its important. Music and arts are part of our everyday life."

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED MARCHER DRESSED AS BIG BIRD AND MITT ROMNEY SAYING:

"We are giving tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires but what are we trying to cut and replace with that. It just seems ridiculous to cut funding for early education when this is all some kids in America get."

Americans will head to the polls on Tuesday November 6th.
